Here is 1985 episode of the television show 60 Minutes which examined the relationship between the role playing game Dungeons and Dragons and suicide in teenagers. After several Dungeons and Dragons fans killed themselves, parents naturally blamed the game. Watch as parents accuse the game of turning their children to the dark side and poor Gary Gygax (one of the creators of the game) has to defend the game's innocence.
That's crazy. Reminds me of "Bowling for Columbine."

Exactly, parents seem to find any excuse for the behavior of their children.
DeleteAnd how many children who did NOT play Dungeons and Dragons have killed themselves? I once knew a girl who tried to kill herself because her parents were getting divorced. Maybe we should outlaw divorces. Another boy I once knew who came from a religious family tried to kill himself because of something it said in the Bible, so let's ban Bibles too.
ReplyDeleteYes that's true. It's sad that the parents had no idea that their sons were unhappy, and assumed that it must've been the strange influence of this "new game" Dungeons and Dragons that caused their kids to act out. It just goes to show that anything new, is often regarded with a lot of suspicion.
